Greenpeace Climate Activists Released.

Greenpeace Climate Activists Released After Three Weeks in Jail for COP15 Protest

Danish police today release four Greenpeace climate protesters who had been held in prison for nearly three weeks. The four activists from Norway, Spain, Switzerland and the Netherlands had been arrested following a peaceful protest staged on December 17th during the UN climate summit in Copenhagen.

Posing as the delegation of a non-existent nation, three activists managed to enter a dinner organised for the heads of state organised by the Danish Queen. They then unfurled a banner reading “politicians talk, leaders act” before they were taken by security. A fourth activist was arrested later.

The release of the four activists came just one day in advance of their detention being reviewed by a Danish judge. The “red carpet four” as they became known still face trial in Danish court as well as possible prison sentences.
Having been re-united with their families, the released activists headed to the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior. The ship had remained in Copenhagen to support the detainees.

Disappointed at the outcome of the UN climate summit and at the unfair detention of the activists, Greenpeace is committed to continue its struggle for a climate treaty that will protect the planet from catastrophic climate change.

“We are delighted to be re-united with our colleagues who have been released from captivity after close to 21 days. They were held unfairly without trial through this period. We drew tremedous inspiration from their courage and we are now energised as ever before to push as hard as we possibly can for a fair, ambitious and legally binding climate treaty so that we can secure this planet for our children and grand children”, said Kumi Naidoo, executive director for Greenpeace International.
